Fashion Anklets

By Sanjay Kali.

Fashion anklets, ankle chains, or ankle bracelets are ornaments put on around the ankle. Anklets and toe rings historically have been used for centuries by unmarried women in India, though in the United States both casual and more formal anklets became fashionable in the late twentieth century. While in western popular culture both younger men and women may wear casual leather anklets, they are popular among normally barefoot women, and more formal anklets made up of silver, gold, beads are commonly part of fashion jewelery for women.

Much more rarely, the ankle chains are joined by a stretch of chain to limit the step. This practice was once more prevalent in the Middle East, where the effect was to give a 'feminine' short tripping step. Today a few western women follow this practice, but rarely in public. A very few people even have 'permanent', e.g. soldered-on, ankle chains, and more rarely still, so is the connecting chain.

Fashion anklets can be made of silver, gold, and other types of less precious metals as well of materials such as leather, plastic, nylon and other such materials. In the western world anklets or ankle chains are mainly used by younger females, but some older women also wear them. Metal anklets are of two types - flexible and inflexible. The flexible ones, often called Pajeb or Jhanjhar in India, are made by tying links in a chain. Subsequently, sonorous bells can be attached to the chain, so that the wearer can make pleasing sounds while walking. Inflexible ones are usually created by giving shape to a flat metal sheet.

Fashion anklets: Styles of anklets

As with any other jewelery, price levels for anklets vary dramatically depending on the type, production methods, and materials. They are also an accessory item worn by a broad range of ages, from young girls to sophisticated women. There are thousands of designs and styles available in the ever-expanding marketplace. Popular types of anklets include, Beaded, Sterling Silver, Yellow Gold, White Gold, Pearl, Charm, Diamond, Gemstone, Birthstone, Coral, Turquoise, Crystal, Shell, Rhinestone, Cubic Zirconia, Nickle and Brass.

Fashion anklets: Guidelines for wearing anklets

Fashion anklets can be of the loose style or of the tight variety. The priority is to determine which style you want to go for and how it should fit you. Either the anklets can lay below the ankle bone or it can be kept above the ankle bone. Therefore choosing your style and size can be made easy by keeping a few simple things in mind. First, start by determining how you want to wear the ankle bracelet. Do you want it to sit above or below your ankle bone, would you like it to fit tightly or loosely? Keep in mind that the preference of the anklet can change depending upon the footwear that you are going to wear for a particular occasion as well as the general style of the anklet itself. When we talk about the style of the anklet, it may include things like the tightness, looseness of the anklet as well as the other associated paraphernalia like the hanging bead or crystal at the end of the anklet.

Fashion anklets: Style and Footware.

It is very important to ascertain whether you are planning to wear anklets with the sandals or the shoes. Depending on this both the style and size may vary. For example if you are planning to wear a beaded or crystal beaded anklet with your shoes then ideally it should be above your ankle bone otherwise the hanging bead or crystal can get inside your shoes and thus make you very uncomfortable for the occasion. So as we can see in this example that if you are using shoes then the beaded anklets should be above the ankles. On the other hand if this type of anklet is used with sandals or flip flops like footwear then it can be put below the ankle bone also. Today adjustable anklets are available in the market which can provide you greater flexibility and you can wear it either above or below the ankle bone either in a loose or tight form.

Fashion anklets: Measurements for anklets

Taking measurement of your ankle is very important before you go for shopping anklets. Using a soft tape is the best method to take measurements. To start with, you need to plan the style of anklet that you may most probably purchase. Further you need to decide in advance whether you are going to wear it with sandals or shoes. Once you have thought about the style and footwear preferences, it is time to take a few measurements to establish your size range. For measuring, you need to have a soft tape. The other method is to use a piece of string and a ruler. With the tape or the string you can measure the thickness of your legs above and below your ankle bone where you are planning to wear your anklet. If you are using the string to measure then through the ruler find out the actual measurement. The soft tape on the other hand will give you a direct measurement.

Fashion anklets: Various varieties of adjustable anklets

Finally make it a point to have variety. The market is full of varieties of anklets which are adjustable in nature and which can be used either above or below the ankle bone. These anklets can therefore be put on as per your choice and they will go with either the sandals or the shoes also. It is better to have a adjustable anklet rather than a fixed length anklet from any point of view. One problem with anklets is that after some time they naturally become loose and here you cannot do anything with a fixed type of anklet but if it is a adjustable type then you can readjust the length to make it tight or loose as per the need.

If you're looking for a gift that will represent the recipient, a birth stone jewelry is one of the most ideal items that you can give. As the term implies, a birth stone represents a month in the calendar and it is often used for various jewelry designs for the young and old.

One of the factors that attract us to birth stones is their varying colors. Each stone is represented by a different color and most of us associate a specific color or a favorite according our corresponding birth stone.

There are so many things that make these interesting apart for the more obvious reasons. Here are 7 interesting thing you might want to know about birth stones:

1. The history of this jewelry dates back to the time of Aaron as told in the Bible, in the book of Exodus [chapter 28, verses 17 to 20]

Josephus, a 1st century Jewish historian, stated that there is a correlation between the twelve stones on Aaron's breastplate, the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year.

Exodus 28:17-20 states

"Then they mounted four rows of precious stones on it. In the first row there was a ruby, a topaz and a beryl; in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald; in the third row a jacinth, an agate and an amethyst; in the fourth row a chrysolite, an onyx and a jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings. There were twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes."

2. The Bible's book of Revelation [chapter 21, verses 19 to 20] also states the precise list of birth stones where the foundations of the New Jerusalem are listed

"And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst."

3. The tradition of wearing birth stones became popular in Poland during the 15th century. The norm recommended that each month a person should wear a corresponding birth stones since it is during its month that the gemstone is more potent than usual. In effect, each person was suggested to own all twelve stones were they can rotate them each month.

4. There are the traditional which are based on cultures and societies. Varying cultures have their own set of birth stones which resulted to inconsistent jewellers' lists.

5. Mystical birth stones originated from Tibet which date back over centuries ago.

6. Ayurvedic birth stones originate from ancient Indian philosophy and medicine which date to 1500 BC.

7. Modern birth stones were standardized in 1912. The Jewellers of America adopted an official list in the effort to standardize the birth stones list. This is the most widely-used in USA, Thailand, Australia and other regions.

The fascination with birth stones will probably never cease. They are multi-colored gemstones that attract all ages with their beauty as well as their multi-faceted history.

Jewelry - Mixing Practicality and Beauty

By Ajeet Khurana .

Jewelry has greatly risen in popularity over the last few decades as one of the best gifts you can give someone. This is due to the many new options that are available on today's wide market. It isn't just about buying your girlfriend a little gold necklace or nice earrings to show that you care. A gift of jewelry can be the perfect way to tell any friend, relative, or lover that you really care for them.

It is not just about the piece of jewelry anymore but what you put inside the jewelry is what makes it a great gift. This has really become true thanks to all of the little customized pieces of jewelry that are now available and it is not just about the gift for them, it is also about the gift for yourself.

Jewelry can serve as a great gift for yourself for several reasons. The first merely revolves around expressing your individual fashion sense. It isn't too expensive to get a small customized locket or charm necklace that holds a favorite symbol or picture to make you feel a little better throughout the day.

If you really love Norse Mythology, then you could easily get a small metal piece engraved with a favorite quote. Or, you could get a small locket and keep a little picture of a lost relative close to your heart. Maybe you just like turtles and want a bracelet or set of earrings that displays this. In the end, it is your choice as to what you want to display.

The second reason has to do with displaying information of a much different kind. Someone with severe allergies or health issues should wear a medical ID bracelet. In the event of an unfortunate accident, the responding paramedics could immediately know about drug allergies and change their plans accordingly. But, these bracelets are not cool.

The standard has been just a little metal plate hanging on your wrist. That will not impress anyone. Today, you can preserve your health and your image by having a customized ID bracelet made. It is possible to have the ID plate surrounded by beads, decorative designs, charms, ties, or just about anything that you could possibly imagine. The plate is just safely planted in the material of your choice, making them practical and beautiful.

It goes without saying that jewelry can be a great gift for a loved one. A beautiful ring, bracelet, necklace, or earring should tell your girlfriend how much your care. No matter what happens, it will always be true that diamonds are a girl's best friend. It isn't just a little gift for a girlfriend, fiance, or wife though.

You can buy a small, tasteful locket for a friend and have it engraved with a little inside joke or picture. If you're into the best friends forever thing, you can even get a matching one. That way either one of you can brighten up a lousy day by looking at the few words and recalling the good times.

It should be pretty obvious that jewelry is a good choice for just about anyone. It has always been a great gift to express how much you care, but it is now even available as a way to express yourself or protect your health.

Antique Jewelry - Where to Purchase These Unique Pieces

By James Greene .

Antique jewelry is a unique type of accessory to add to one's collection. Whether one is an avid collector of these types of items or if they simply crave a piece from the past, antique jewelry or estate jewelry, as it is sometimes referred, is a nice addition to consider. There are a few different places from which one can acquire these objects and some may have better luck via one avenue than the other.

Estate Sales

Frequently estate sales will offer antique jewelry pieces to the public for a certain price. These types of sales tend to feature older, antique items such as furniture, clothing and jewelry. This is a great way to obtain a piece of jewelry which has been passed down throughout the generations and suddenly has no future family owner to go to. This is where the lover of antique jewelry enters the picture and provides an appreciative home for the piece. One may also obtain a really good deal by purchasing estate jewelry in this manner as the seller is looking to relieve themselves of the property and empty out the home for one reason or another. Estate sales are often advertised in the local newspaper or by signs placed around one's town.

Auctions

Another alternative to consider when hoping to find a beautiful antique treasure is to take part in auctions. This can be accomplished either in person or online. Auctions often favor items of this type which have been handed down from generation to generation and one can often find unique items via this route. Auctions which are held at physical locations and are well known by the antique buying public may present some competition and cost issues for individuals as the items may go for higher bids than one would want to spend. On the other hand, online auctions may offer a better deal for antique jewelry hunters as well as a better chance to obtain the desired object.

Antique stores are another stop which one should make in their venture to obtain antique jewelry. Since these types of specialty stores deal exclusively with antique items they may offer a wide selection when it comes to antique jewelry options. The store may also present unique pieces to the public which they have a hard time finding elsewhere.

Jewelry Stores

Last but certainly not least, one may find the perfect piece of antique jewelry at their local jewelry store. Some stores will have a display case set up solely to display antique jewelry for sale. These types of stores as with the antique stores may also have a good collection of estate jewelry and one should certainly take a trip over to the store to see what type of items they may offer which fall into this genre.

Platinum Jewelry - A High Quality and Durable Option

By Riley Grant .

Platinum, a white metal, is one of the most popular choices for making jewelry. People all over the world adore platinum for its durability and strength, and this has actually been true for several centuries, barring the period during and immediately after World War II when it was temporarily banned for use in the manufacturing of jewelry. Not only that, but it does not tarnish, as so many other precious and semi-precious metals are prone to do with the passage of time. So, if you are thinking about investing in a piece of high quality, elegant jewelry, you may want to consider investing in one or more pieces of platinum jewelry.

While you will typically pay more for items made with this particular precious metal, in the long run, it is usually a very good investment because it will last you, not only your own lifetime, but also the lifetimes of your heirs to whom you pass it along. In other words, it may take you some time to save up for the piece of platinum jewelry that you have had your eye on for a long time.

But on the other hand, once you do have enough money set aside to purchase that piece of platinum jewelry, you will be glad that you saved up for it because it will never go down in value. Also, it will never start to look old and tarnished. It wears very well, and gemstones look gorgeous when set in platinum, as it really highlights their beauty extremely well.

Selecting a Man's Wedding Ring

By Andrew Moquin .

Some men assume that selecting a wedding ring for themselves is pretty much a case of grabbing the first wedding band off the shelf that fits your finger. However, since that ring is going to be on your finger for many years it is important that you select a ring that meets some criteria. Read on for some tips on how to select a wedding ring that is going to last the test of time.

Metal. OK, there are more metals to select from than the standard gold ring. Men should consider any other jewelry that they wear, including their watch. Do you have a gold dress watch, or is it stainless steel? Do you want your ring to match? Do you want to match your fiancee's ring? Do you have skin allergies? Do you like traditional, contemporary, or unique wedding rings? Lastly, what is your budget?

Popular selections for men's ring metals include gold, both yellow and white, platinum, titanium, tungsten, and palladium. From a hard wearing point of view, palladium, platinum, tungsten, ceramic, and titanium rings are all very strong. These metals are also great for anyone with skin issues as they are all hypo-allergenic. From a budget point of view, platinum will cost you the most, followed by the golds, and then palladium.

Men who favor the contemporary look may prefer the tinted titaniums which are available in blacks, grays, and a variety of other eye catching colors. Incorporating more than one colored metal into a ring is also extremely popular, and not only adds visual appeal, but can solve problems of matching watches, other jewelry and of course the bride's wedding ring.

Lifestyle and Work. This is a very important consideration for most men. Do you have a job that involves using your hands in manual labor? Do you come into contact with corrosive chemicals? Do you play contact sports? Many men would just remove their ring for vigorous activities, but if this is a daily issue for you, then you may prefer to select a ring that is up to the challenge. Another important point to note is if you are in risk of catching your ring on anything and having to have it cut off? One drawback to a totally indestructible ring is that they can't be cut off quickly in the case of an accident. This can be an issue with both aircraft grade titanium and tungsten wedding rings.

Design. There are many ring designs to select from apart from the traditional band. Male wedding rings can be carved, woven, plaited, include stones, or be multi-colored, just for starters. However, many of these wedding rings may not be suitable for daily heavy manual labor.

There are many different styles of wedding rings available for men, ranging from the simple and traditional gold band, through to modern metals, highly patterned, and set with stones. Consider your lifestyle, budget, and personal preference, when deciding which ring or even engagement rings are going to be best for both of you.

Body Jewelry - Party Body Decorated!

By Gail Leino.

If you are planning a teen or even a preteen party, you should consider that two of the most popular things right now are tattoos and body jewelry. It seems that everyone wants them, but they are permanent and costly. Still, before you discard the idea right away, consider that these can all be done on a temporary basis, and think how much fun your partiers could have if you give temporary tattoos and body jewelry as party favors!

Body jewelry, even belly button rings, lip rings, and brow rings, etc. can be purchased in temporary styles that require no piercings. Add into the mix inexpensive body jewelry like toe rings, belly chains, and ankle bracelets, and your party guests can sparkle with the best bejeweled ones out there!

Temporary tattoos are another popular temporary body jewelry or adornment. Someone who is a temporary tattoo artist may be hired to airbrush these on at your party, or sheets of custom designed tattoos may be ordered and put on by anyone. These typically last from one day to a week, but can be removed with alcohol or baby oil. As long as you make sure you are purchasing tattoos made from FDA approved material, you will be using tattoos that are made of vegetable dyes or henna, and they generally pose little risk of health issues apart from rare allergic reactions.

How Color Gemstones In Jewelry Affect Your Personality

By Anurag Jain.

Now you have many more reasons than just aesthetic beauty of the gem to wear gemstone jewelry.

Traditionally people used to wear amulets to guard them against evil spirits. Later on the trend caught on with the birthstones. Birthstones are known to have positive influences on a persons life. They increase positive traits and decrease negativity in an individuals personality. Expert astrologers now recommend various stones and not just the birthstone to influence the wearers personality.

Believing in the concept is again based on faith and there may be different opinions on that. All I can say is that give it a try and there may be something in it. After all since centuries people have had some sort of 'charm quotient'. Here is what each stone influences:

Agate - Plentiful of resources, encourages camaraderie, brings good luck, enhances fearlessness, also helps in stomach related ailments

Amber - Lucky in romance and love, increases psychic abilities, gets wisdom

Amethyst - increases satisfaction in life, brings peace and strength in the character, helps in identifying ones own self

Amazonite - a soothing stone - supposedly absorbs microwaves and relieves stress, helps the wearer to see two perspectives of a problem

Aventurine - increases creativity, enhances leadership skills, motivates the lazy ones and brings materialistic happiness

Citrine - energiser stone, brings prosperity, makes the person generous and creative, increases motivation and has healing properties for internal organs

Emerald - a symbol of love, protects from evil charms, increases memory retention, increases fertility

If you prefer to get your jewelry self designed, loose gemstones are available in the market. A simple visit to the jewelry market should help you in the buying effort. If you prefer online shopping, shop with a wholesaler who has a credible history of being in the business.

The Pros and Cons of Online Jewelry Shopping

By Ryan Frank .

People's concerns about buying jewelry online are understandable. After all, you wouldn't want to risk a lost or damaged shipment when that shipment contains something as important as your fiance's engagement ring or wedding anniversary present. There is also the possibility that the actual, physical piece of jewelry might not look the way you had expected it to when you were viewing it online.

However, one also has to stop and consider the benefits of online jewelry shopping. Online jewelers, by and large, have a wider selection of goods. Prices, as well, are usually a lot better when you buy online. Ultimately, the final decision is up to you, but here is a brief breakdown of the pros and cons of online jewelry shopping that might help you make up your mind.

Pros

Speed - Self-explanatory. No driving to the store, no driving back, no stopping for gas, etc. Select, place order, and buy with just a handful of clicks.

Convenience - By shopping online, you don't have to deal with traffic, crowds of shoppers, check-out lines, parking, or overbearing salespeople. Online you can shop from the comfort of home at your own pace and convenience.

Variety - Online jewelers can offer much bigger selections than retailers or catalog jewelers. Online you will find rare pieces that you won't come across anywhere else.

Pricing - Online retailers have much fewer overhead costs than conventional stores, which means their savings get passed on to you.

Information - If, while shopping online, you come across anything you don't understand (say, why are colored diamonds more expensive than white diamonds?) you can simply look it up! Even if you don't decide to buy online, you can still use the internet to do most of the legwork involved in deciding what kind of necklace, ring, or bracelet to get your loved one.

Cons

Human interaction - Yes, salespeople can be annoying. But what if you have a question and want to talk to an actual person about it? A traditional jewelry store can provide you with one-on-one, friendly customer service, which online stores simply cannot do. Your best bet online is to look for retailers that have customer service phone line you can call.

Shipment problems - Though it happens rarely, the possibility of a shipment getting lost or damaged is always there. Make sure that the online retailer you shop from has a policy that covers lost or damaged shipments.

Security Issues - Many people are reluctant to shop online because they're afraid of their personal and financial information being intercepted and used for fraudulent purposes. While this is still a valid concern, internet security has come a long way. Every legitimate online retailer will work with the latest security software so that all your important information is encrypted and kept secure. Review online retailer's privacy policy before you decide to make a purchase through them.

Body Piercing Problems

By Michael J Paetzold .

Body piercing is very popular among men and women. A lot of areas in the body are used for piercing like ear lobes, ear cartilage, nostrils, nose bridge, eyebrows, lips, cheeks, nipples, navels, and genitals. These are the most common areas used for piercing.

Most people who have body piercings do not develop any problems, but some do. When piercings get infected, it is a horrible sight, and sometimes, they smell awful, too.

The ears are the most common piercing site, especially among women. Earlobes heal relatively easy without any problems. Ear cartilage, on the other hand, takes longer to heal, harder to clean, and has the highest risk of getting infected. Because they take a longer time to heal, your chances of acquiring infectious diseases greatly increase.

The common problems that may develop from body piercing are as follows:

•Infection of the wound - the risk of infection increases if you have other health issues such as diabetes. Infection of the tongue or lips may cause speech, chewing, and/or swallowing problems or swelling that can impede the throat. Infection of a nipple may scar the breast tissue and limit the capability to breast feed.

•Splitting or tearing of the skin - this can trigger the formation of scar tissue and may cause permanent skin damage.

•Allergic reactions - some people develop allergies to a certain metal used in the jewelry. Make sure that you
use jewelry specifically designed for your piercing site. Use only non-allergenic jewelry. Other types of jewelry you should use include surgical stainless steel, platinum, gold, titanium, and niobium.

•Problems caused by the jewelry - jewelry in the mouth may cause cracking or chipping of the teeth, gum problems, and difficulty chewing or swallowing. Jewelry in the navel can get caught in clothing and rip the skin. Jewelry in the genital area can cause injury to you or your partner when having sex.

Those are just a few of the problems you might be facing when you have a body piercing. If the piercer is inexperienced, he can damage underlying blood vessels and nerves. Now, that is a high price to pay, just to look cool. Is it not? Whatever your reasons are for getting a body piercing, just make sure that you handle the wound with care. Bacteria thrive on open wounds, so be careful.

How to Repair Your Old Broken Fashion Jewelry ?

By Tanisha Howard .

Like most fashion jewelry (a.k.a costume jewelry) lovers you probably have some old seemingly worn out rings, necklaces, or bracelets shoved to the back of your drawer or jewelry box that never get worn. The great thing about inexpensive costume jewelry is that it is easy to get your moneys worth out of it. However, why not get even more bank for your buck by breathing new life into those old jewelry pieces by reversing some of their most common issues:

Problem 1: Dirty or Tarnished?

Cleaning fashion jewelry is simple but choose your cleaner wisely. Only use a jewelry cleaner that specifically states that it is safe for costume jewelry and read the ingredients to make sure that it does not contain alcohol, acids, or ammonia because these can strip the gold or silver plate. Use a children's soft bristle tooth brush for cleaning around costume jewelry stones. Its probably not be a good idea to immerse rhinestone jewelry because the stones can become unglued.

If your fashion jewelry items are only lightly tarnished a good buffing with a soft dry jewelry cloth may do the trick. For more heavily tarnished items a jewelry polish can work wonders.

Problem 2: Worn out gold or silver plating?

Because typical fashion jewelry plating is very thin it can eventually rub off from wear or become damaged from the use of harsh chemicals, creams, or perfumes. If this happens there are several options in gold and silver re-plating solutions that can be found online. Some are fairly simple and can be performed without the use of heat or electricity while others are a little more complex. I found one website in particular that offers a very good variety of plating options (e.g. immersion plating, pen plating) and general plating instructions for precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, and rhodium. It is shorinternational.com. Click on the contents and search box and then plating gateway. One word of caution: I would recommend buying only cyanide free plating solutions as cyanide is poisonous. For silver lovers there is one product that I have personally used that has worked well for me and it is called Silver Brite. This is an all in one cream that cleans, polishes, and re-plates worn silver on jewelry and other items. It is very easy to use and fairly inexpensive. Just rub the cream on with an applicator sponge or a Q-tip for small items and rub off with the buffing cloth that is included with the kit. The result is a clean, sparking silver finish.

Problem 3: Loose or missing stones?

If a stone such as a cubic zirconia, plastic, or glass has become loose or fallen out a drop or two of super glue will do the trick. Just be careful not to use too much. You don't want the glue oozing out of the sides and causing the piece to adhere to your skin or some other object. Most of the time a single drop will suffice unless it is a very large stone in which case you may want to use two drops. If you cannot find the missing stone there are companies online that sell loose cz stones if you have a particular chain or ring band you want to salvage. Simply do an internet search for cz stones.

Problem 4: Broken clasp?

If your fashion necklace or bracelet has a broken clasp make sure it is the actual clasp that is broken. The problem may be a broken jump ring which is a tiny metal ring that is open in one spot which connects the clasp to the chain. If this is the problem it can be easily fixed. First identify what kind of clasp it is (e.g. lobster clasp which is shaped like a lobster claw and has a tiny spring loaded lever, a magnetic clasp which is just as it sounds, or a spring ring which is also spring loaded) then visit your local craft store or do a search online for jewelry clasps and you should find what you need. If the clasp is soldered on you will need to contact a jewelry repair professional.

Problem 5: Out of date:

If you simply want to add a new flair to your old fashion jewelry pieces you can simply mix and match. If you have a special pendant that you are especially fond of give it a new life with a more contemporary chain. Add new charms to your favorite bracelet or re-plate that old silver necklace with a shiny new gold finish. Be creative!

3 Big Reasons Why Silver Jewelry is Better Than Gold Jewelry

By Jansen Davis

Affordability

The most obvious fact as to why silver is better to buy than gold is affordability. Sterling silver is more inexpensive than gold primarily due to issues of quality and abundance. Gold is rarer in the ground than its counterpart. Although both metals have similar melting points and are considered precious metals, gold is heavier and doesn't tarnish. Silver tarnishes only slightly and has proven durability as silver coins in relatively good condition, dating back to the Roman Empire some two thousand years ago, have been discovered. Affordability also gives silver an advantage in variety of design. Vermeil jewelry also known as yellow gold plated silver jewelry in the form or rings, earrings and bracelets are a great alternative to gold. In this case, you can have a gold look and pay silver prices while not losing on quality. Given the range of affordability, as a collector, buying jewelry made with silver gives you the ability to own multiple silver pieces for the price of one gold piece.

Popular Variety

The popularity of silver material in applications outside of jewelry is growing. Sterling silver is used for silverware, appliances, jewelry, furniture and plenty of other industrial artifacts. Sterling silver jewelry, such as rings, earrings, and bracelets have become more popular than gold because of a growing understanding of the practical value of silver in commercial industry as well as jewelry fashion. The use of combinations of silver and gold in earrings, rings and bracelets is now commonplace. As the popularity of silver jewelry increases so to will the breadth of choices widen. More jewelry designers are offering a variety of high product lines made in silver. Companies like Tiffany and Co. continue to grow as silver jewelry gains interest. This large focus on silver jewelry will continue to increase popularity which in turn will spawn varied and exciting jewelry expression, benefiting the buying public.

Value

Silver can be a smart investment. Given historical prices and high demand, the value of silver will likely continue rising. As more industries find uses for silver, it will attract investment dollars as consolidation occurs and stability is established. As a wearer and owner of silver jewelry you can rest assured that your piece has intrinsic value as a precious metal in a commodities market. Recent history shows that silver has outperformed gold in many instances. Since 2000 silver prices tripled. Given the low price of silver as it relates to gold, there is a tremendous upside potential still yet unrealized. Here is, in conclusion, yet another benefit to owning silver as the mere buying of jewelry is considered a method of investing in commodities.

Health Benefits of Magnetic Jewelry

By Susan Westingham

Mankind has been using magnets to heal the bodies aches and pains for hundreds of years. Historians show that the Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Greeks used them for medicinal or life-prolonging reasons. Modern man, however debunked their healing properties as being pure myth. Does magnetic force fields have an effect on the human body? Is it myth or one of ancient civilizations secrets, now revealed?

Recent studies have shown that magnets and magnetic fields had measurable effects on the blood vessels of rats. And we all know that whatever works on rats, stands a chance on working on humans. A more recent and well documented study on the effect of magnets on the human body, performed in 1997 at the Baylor College of Medicine,Houston USA caused hte medical world to sit up and take notice.

The tests were performed on post polio patients. A selection were given placebo magnets, while others were given true magnetic jewelry. Neither patient nor staff knew who was wearing the placebos. Astonishingly enough, over 70% of those wearing the magnetic jewelry said that the level of pain they were experiencing lessened significantly.

Since then other studies have been conducted. None have been able to disprove the theory that magnetic therapy is indeed beneficial and helpful in curing certain ailments--especially those involving joint or bone pain.

Magnetic jewelry today is beautifully crafted. Metals used for creating magnetic jewelry include hermatite, titanium, tungsten or stainless steel. Designs are creative, tasteful and elegant. Some is even hand-crafted. Magnetic jewelry is no longer unattractive. To the contrary, it is well made and suitable for wearing on any occassion.

What is Art Deco Jewelry?

By Alison Takvorian .

Art Deco is a term you are sure to hear if you are at all interested in antique or vintage jewelry. The jewelry designs of the 1920s to 30s were greatly influenced by the Art Deco movement that was taking place around the world. The term Art Deco was actually taken from the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art which was organized in 1925 in France. Many famous designers and artists presented their wares to the public at this famous show.

One of the biggest historical events to influence Art-Deco jewelry design was the discovery of King Tut's tomb. This inspired a wave of design that was very Egyptian in nature. Pyramids, serpents and spiders emerged as design elements. Advances in technology were also a definite influence as well which can be seen reflected in the designs of autos and airplanes that found their way into pieces of jewelry.

Then, coming out of the First World War, the country was ready for a bit more flash and pizzazz. There was a lot of geometric and abstract design used in all types of jewelry. Favorite colors were black onyx, blue sapphires, green emeralds, and red coral and of course white diamonds. Designs were bold and pieces were often big. Pendants were often long and free flowing while bangle bracelets and cocktail rings were extremely popular. The boyishness of the female wardrobe of the day also led to incorporation of other costume pieces such as cigarette cases and holders.

There was money to spend at the end of the war and prior to the stock market crash, a lot of it was spent on jewelry and jewelry making. As a result, many of the designs of the Art-Deco period were very luxurious. Some of the world's most renowned names in the industry emerged during this period. Lalique, Cartier, Chanel, and Van Cleef are just a sampling.

The economic times played the greatest role in the end of the Art Deco era. The downturn of the early thirties led to a more restricted production of jewelry and designers were forced to turn to cheaper materials to produce jewelry items that a less affluent society could afford.

Art Deco had another surge in popularity during the 1960's when a new show was organized based on books that had been written about the original Art Deco movement. The phrase Art Deco was actually first coined during this period.

Today Art Deco reproduction jewelry is a very popular choice among wholesalers of jewelry both in rings and other pieces.

The Meaning of Friendship Bracelets

By Cherry Bruce .

Typically, friendship bracelets have been given from one friend to another. Originally made popular in the 70s during the time of peace and love, they are symbolic, meaningful, and can also be quite fashionable. Sometimes, friendship bracelets may just be a simple piece of string, but other times, you may want to give something a little more long lasting to show your appreciation and pride.

Another option for friendship bracelets are those that incorporate colors and symbols. For example, get your bestie a bracelet with her birthstone or favorite color. Pick up a matching one for yourself and you'll be a set. Bracelets don't have to be marked with the word "friendship" for you to give them as gifts. You can turn any bracelet into a friendship bracelet. Try a charm bracelet adorned with symbols that relate to her favorite activities, sports and hobbies. Present it with a card and a well written message for a complete package that will be much appreciated. Friendship bracelets can be given between two friends, or an entire group. Girls can give them to their mothers or their schoolmates. Women of any age can get in on this timeless trend that is fun to wear and will never go out of style.

How Cufflinks Came About ?

By Mary Michaels.

The 17th century witnessed the dawn of cuff links as an official symbol of fashion, social prestige and luxury. Everyone in the western world was fastening their shirtsleeves with ribbon or ordinary strings that time. The first few pieces of cuff links were made as fairly simple buttons, linked together by a small chain, and they were made of glass. A century hence, a new jewelry material was introduced-glass paste which was often used to form little gems.

Still another century and cufflinks became a part and parcel of men's accessory. New production techniques were also introduced. Electroplating and electro-metallurgy permitted more freedom for elaborate designs in gold and silver. These techniques also provided for the mass production of cufflinks making it available to the masses. Cufflinks were before accessories of affluent persons but the 19th century made cufflinks accessible to the steadily increasing bourgeoisie. Cheaper materials like metal alloys and imitation jewelries were used to create cheaper cufflinks. During the 1860s, famous jewelers like Child & Child in London and Krementz & Company in New York have modified their practice and targeted the masses and middle class as their cufflinks market. They sold each pair in a price that was just right for anyone to afford.

The French cuff, or the double cuff, shirt became stylish dresses for men in 1840s. This trend produced a higher demand for cufflinks. By 1887 Tiffany, Cartier and Faberge-all famous jewelry designers of that era-spontaneously invested on this trend and started designing different cufflinks designs to suit different occasions and mood. Different materials were used. Gold, mother of pearl, enamel, mosaics and other precious stones were utilized. These prestigious jewelers were then creating works of art that can be worn by men. Since then, shirts that were produced included slits and button holes which provided function and not just accessory to cufflinks.

Also during the 1920s, the Boyer company introduced the first rolling button, or the rod-type cufflink system. This type of cufflink is still being used today. They also mass produced tiepins and art inspired cufflinks made of enamel which took the male accessory a step further. And then another bigger step for cufflinks was made when women started wearing them during the early years of the 20th century. The freedom and vitality that was afforded to women allowed them to participate in the cufflinks industry, adorning their sleeves with fashion accessories which were previously acclimated to men.

A low point for the cufflink trade came during the beginning of the 20th century when shirt companies started mass producing shirts that already have buttons attached to their cuffs. This low point further challenged the cufflinks producers to create more elegant, classy and rare cufflinks. Cufflinks then started to take on a different image: a man who wears them is the quintessence of business and evening style. Van Cleef & Arpels started inventing designs-the channel setting-where stones are the primary designs but no metal support is visible. These, by far, are the most jeweled cufflinks that are still being produced up until today.

The rock and roll trend during the Beatles era inspired cufflinks that were made available in the market. Cartier exclusively produce heart shaped cufflinks, Bulgari perfected the diamond heart shaped cufflinks with blue enamel background, David Webb miniatured animal designs and Dinh Van incorporated a "zen" image into the industry. Every design that can be imagined was inscribed in cufflinks. The options were endless.

A Cufflink Museum in Conway, New Hampshire can be visited. It showcases the multihued history of cufflinks and boasts of 50,000 pairs of cufflinks from 212 countries all over the globe. It has been by far the most prominent cufflink museum in the world. Tourists, historians and cufflinks connoisseurs can follow in this museum the evolution of cufflinks over the centuries with the augmentation of technology, art, music and fashion.

For whatever purpose-showcasing individual style, imbibing elegance, or simply exhibiting your own personality-you can definitely find a cufflink that is a best match to fit your need. It is given: cufflinks are always, and always will be, the most indispensable wrist accessory for men that will embellish more sleeves for more generations to come.

Advantages of Buying Handmade Jewellery

By Rebecca Leeson .

Whether you are looking for a unique and lovely gift for someone who is important to you, or whether you just want to find a piece of jewellery that matches your style and personality, why not look into commissioning a piece of handmade jewellery? When most people think of jewellery, they often end up choosing mass produced jewellery that is so common in the high street shops. Often, mass produced jewellery not only has quality issues, but you're also likely to find that everyone else is wearing the same version of it. So why not take a moment and consider getting something much more personal?

Firstly, you'll often find that purchasing handmade jewellery will get you a piece of jewellery that is of significantly higher quality than you'll find in the high street shops. When you are dealing with a reputable jewellery maker, you're going to get the materials that you're paying for. In many cases, this is visible right away; for instance, when someone who is working by hand uses white gold, they can generally ensure a piece that has a clearer, truer colour to the metal than a mass produced piece sometimes has. If you want a piece of jewellery that will last you a lifetime, you want something that was made by hand.

Another reason to look into purchasing handcrafted jewellery is down to price. Too many people have the idea that handmade jewellery is prohibitively expensive, but this is not always true. When you purchase a piece from someone who is doing the work on their own, they will often have significantly lower overheads than a large company would need to deal with. So although the piece will take many hours instead of a few minutes to produce, the price can often still be lower; if a piece only passes through one pair of hands, only one person needs to make a profit and you can rest assured the quality will be high.

You should also consider how unique and creative your jewellery can be. Have you always wanted jewellery that allows you to stand out and that suits your personality? Do you find that this year's crop of fashion jewellery does nothing for you at all? Avoid that by requesting a personal piece that will always look good on you. Do you have a love of elegant Victorian designs, or do you love loose and modern geometric shapes? Do you need earrings that dangle and shine or do you prefer studs that have been worked very delicately? Getting bespoke jewellery is a good way to make sure you have exactly what you're looking for.

There are far too many people out there who simply "make do" with the jewellery that they can find rather than looking for a unique piece that can be made especially for them. Google 'handmade jewellery' today to find that exclusive piece of handmade jewellery you'll always love instead of making do with something you merely like.

How to Buy Fashion Jewelry Rings ?

By Chris Deltise.

Fashion jewelry never goes out of style but frequently when a new style comes out many replicas and knock offs hit the market trying to cash in on the latest trends. Many people purchase what they believe is high-end designer jewelry when in fact they are buying poor quality items made from cheap materials. If you want to invest your hard earned cash in genuine items whom can you trust?

The most important part is to shop at retailers with proven reputations. Go to well-known stores and retail chains that sell brand name fashion jewelry items. Stores like this depend on the reputation they have for only selling high quality brand name items. There is a lot less risk of being conned than when you buy from a shop that is not well known. Also check out the label on the item itself as added assurance.

If you design taste are for something more original in the way of fashion jewelry rings visit local jewelry designer shops. These types of places usually sell items they have made themselves so you can be certain of buying original pieces of fashion jewelry.

Shopping online is something many people do these days and you can look at larger variety of jewelry rings than you could locally. Use your common sense and on sites that offer seller feedback, like eBay, check out the sellers reputation.

Most importantly read and make sure you fully understand the returns policy so that if the item is not what you expected or desired you can return it for a refund. Also make sure the site offers secure card processing to ensure your information is safe. Common sense is ultimately the most vital aspect in buying fashion jewelry rings, or even anything where you are parting with money.

How to Recognize Fake Gold

By Drake Wildman

Here are various ways to differentiate fake gold from real gold. I have outlined some of those ways below.

Price test: The first test of real gold is to do a market survey of the current price of Gold. If the gold item you have is far cheaper then, that may be a sign to investigate more.

Visual test: This can be very deceiving but there is no way to recognize real gold without a visual test. The question then is "How does real gold look like?" First of all, look for some kind of marking. Every genuine gold has a marking showing the karat value. They usually appear as 14k, 18k, 22k and 24k. The karat system is used to express the percentage of pure gold in the item. The higher the karat value, the higher the percentage of gold. This means that 24k is pure gold, 18k is about 75% gold, 14k is about 59% gold while 10k is about 42% gold. Sometimes one may see GP or EP beside the markings. This means that the item is plated with gold. It is just covered with gold. This is not real gold because the gold plating may just be a very thin layer.

It is important to note that gold can come in different colors when they are mixed with different compounds. The examples include white gold which is produced when nickel is mixed with gold; Palladium used to create white gold for people allergic to nickel; green gold when silver is mixed with gold; and pink to red gold when different quantities of copper are mixed with gold.

Real gold has a percentage of sheen but should not be very shiny. When a gold jewelry is extremely shiny, it may not be real gold.

Acid test: The reaction of the item to nitric acid or hydrochloric acid will help to determine whether it is genuine or not. Real gold is not affected or does not form a reaction with nitric acid or hydrochloric acid. Most metals that are usually portrayed as gold when tested in hydrochloric acid form a reaction whereas real gold does not, that is why this has been established as the real test for gold.

Reputable Jeweler: It is always advisable to buy gold from a reputable jeweler because you can always request a test, check the markings and find some good advice about the product which you would not have got.

Discoloration: Fake gold, when worn can either cause discoloration of the skin or discoloration of the jewelry itself. Many people use this method as the simplest way of testing for real gold. And for those that have a warranty, they are simply returned when found to be fake.

Rust: Fake gold rusts in humid temperature, and also over time while real gold does not.
Bite the gold: Gold is soft and when bitten leaves a small mark. Fake gold is very strong and when bitten does not leave a mark.

Weight: Gold has a good amount of density. Put it in water and see the quantity of water that it displaces. The more density it has, then gold is likely present.

What is the Best Way to Clean Silver Jewelry?

By Sarah Carnegie

Most of us love to wear silver jewelry. One may choose delicate filigree pieces or chunky tribal pieces and everything in between, to suit one's taste. But it is soon noticed that the once shiny and lustrous silver pieces have become black or have tarnished, taking away its beauty completely. So what is the best way to clean silver jewelry?

Why Do Silver Get Black and Tarnish?

Let us first look at the reasons behind this tarnishing and blackening of silver jewelry. The sliver pieces blacken as and when they come in contact with water, perspiration, soap and chlorine. Other reasons for the blackening are the presence of humidity, sulfides and pollution in the air.

While we can do nothing about the kind of air it is exposed to when we wear it, there are a few things that can take care of it while it is being stored. Wipe the piece with a soft cloth before storing it. Remember to store it in a dry and dark place. It would be better if you could store it wrapped in tissue paper and sealed in zip lock pouches.

Even with all the care that you may bestow on your silver jewelry you can not protect it entirely from tarnishing or blackening. You will need to clean your silver jewelry periodically to maintain its beauty and shine. There are many ways to do it.

The Best Ways to Keep Your Silver Clean

The best way to keep your silver jewelry in good condition is to shine it with a soft cloth. Normally a good buffing with a soft cloth is enough to get back the old shine. More over it is the best way as it does not remove the patina from the silver pieces.

Another good home remedy to clean your silver jewelry is to use the mundane toothpaste. Yes you can use a non abrasive tooth paste to bring back the shine on your silver pieces. You need to use a very soft bristled toothbrush to clean it. Once you have buffed it wash it clean with water. Wipe it dry and use the Sunshine cloth to dry it and buff it.

You can even use some baking powder and hot water to clean your precious jewelry. Line a basin with aluminum foil and place the pieces on it. Dust the pieces liberally with baking soda and then pour hot boiling water over it. Keep turning the pieces; remove them after a maximum of two minutes. Wash with clean water, dry and buff them.

As a last resort to clean really stubborn tarnish you can opt for cleaning fluids that are available in the market. Use them only if nothing else works on the tarnish. These dips take away the patina of the silver pieces and the pieces acquire a too shiny look. Don't leave your silver jewelry in the dip. Just dip it in and pull it out. These commercial solutions can harm soft gemstones. Remember to wash them clean and then dry and buff them.

By Jamie Jefferson.

Nothing adds fresh flair to an old outfit faster than updated jewelry, and the new jewelry trends allow a lot of room for creativity and personal expression.

New-Hued Pearls
Pearls have always been a natural choice for women who want to add class to their outfit. This season, the pearls are taking on a whole new look. Yellow, gold and other autumn colors are making their appearance in pearls. Chocolate brown pearls are also a huge new trend.

The new hues don't stop in the warm shades. Kiwi, raspberry, gray and champagne are all very popular pearl colors, as well. These colors are being used individually or together for unique necklace looks.

Stacked Bracelets
If pearl necklaces aren't your thing, you will like the next popular trend: stacked bracelets. The more bracelets, the better. It doesn't matter what material they are made from: Gold, silver, pearls, and leather are all being used together or in groups of similar colors.

The best thing about stacks of bracelets is that you can take the look in several different ways. You can look for sleek and sophisticated bracelets for a classy look. Men's Style Watches
Women's watches are always popular, but, this season, the trend in women's watches is men's watches. We're seeing watches that are chunkier than in previous years. Watch bands are available in many different types of leather, as well as some that incorporate metal and stone elements.

Chandelier Earrings
Chandelier earrings are a great way to lengthen the look of your neck and add drama to your look. Chandeliers have come and gone when it comes to fashion, but now they are very popular again. The earrings have a single post and then a long chain with either a drop pearl or another type of jewel. They can either have a single stone or an intricate multi-chain design that are set up similar to real chandeliers.
